Perusing The Pyrenees
The Pyrenees Mountains present lovers of the great outdoors with ample opportunities to get out and about. From hiking and cycling to skiing and snowboarding, there is plenty to capture the imagination of anyone with a sense of adventure.
Snow themed holidays might be the first things that spring to mind when the Pyrenees are mentioned and there certainly are several well known destinations to choose from.
Snowy mountains and slopes galore give you plenty of choice from both the French and Spanish Pyrenees and the independent principality of Andorra lies in close proximity too, sandwiched in the eastern portion of the mountain range.
Andorra Ski Resorts are ever popular and the French and Spanish Pyrenees both have their fair share of resorts to choose from.
Aragon is the highest resort, boasting the longest down-hill runs and the best descents in the whole of the area. Pico del Aneto is the highest mountain of the Pyrenees.
La Molina is located in the Catalan Pyrenees and is the oldest ski resort in Spain so you could head here for a taste of the traditional.
The Pyrenees is a large and expansive area so it makes sense to do a spot of forward planning and research the different locales before making your final booking.
In physiographical terms the Pyrenees are typically divided into three sections: the Atlantic (or Western), the Central, and the Eastern Pyrenees.
From East to West the Spanish Pyrenees are part of the following provinces; Girona, Barcelona, Lleida, Huesca, Navarra, and Guipúzcoa.
The French Pyrenees work in a similar fashion and run from Pyrenees-Orientales, Aude, Ariège, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrenees, and Pyrenees-Atlantiques. The Pyrenees National Park encompasses Hautes-Pyrenees and Pyrenees-Atlantiques.
Those who aren’t so fond of the snow shouldn’t despair as there are plenty of other activities to immerse in all year long.
There are walking paths which offer fantastic scenery and bucket loads of variety and whether you want to trek for a few hours or several days, you will find a suitable option.
Three main long-distance footpaths run the length of the mountain range; the GR 10 across the northern slopes, the GR 11 across the southern slopes, and the HRP which traverses peaks and ridges along a high altitude route. Each route traverses the entire Pyrenees mountain range from the Atlantic coast across to the Mediterranean shores
If you need to take a break from walking or hiking there are hundreds of lakes in which you can cool off and refresh.
Continuing on the water front there are several waterfalls dotted around and the Pyrenees and natural mineral springs are also common place.
To get to the Pyrenees all you need to do is book a flight to a nearby city or area, Barcelona is a popular option.
Barcelona car rental, or indeed car rental from any area, will ensure you explore the Pyrenees with ease.
